coding With Scratch

Coding With Scratch

Grades 1st to 3rd

This hands-on class teaches computer programming to first to third graders using MIT’s Scratch 2.0 system. With an excellent ratio of no more than six students to one instructor (and more often 4:1), our budding computer scientists receive the attention needed to succeed in coding their creations. Our youngest programmers explore themes ranging from Drawing & Animation, Storytelling, Problem Solving and Game Design.  With creativity always at the forefront of each class, students learn systematic coding concepts such as timing, event handling and sequencing to make various projects. The class is capped off with a multi-week effort where each child builds their own final project to present to the group and publishes it on MIT’s website for the community to view, comment and download! Multiple layers of challenging material are available allowing students to repeat this class until proficiency is achieved and they are ready for the next challenge. No previous coding experience is required, however your child must be comfortable working independently on a computer, including operating the computer using a mouse and reading and understanding basic words used to code.

Coding With Scratch

Grades 4th to 8th

This class teaches computer programming using MIT’s Scratch 2.0 system to children in fourth grade and up. The course material is divided into various themes including Drawing & Animation, Game Design and Problem Solving. Students utilize math concepts such as equations and logical reasoning combined with scientific principles such as gravity and collisions to explore the world of coding. The class is capped-off with a multi-week effort where each child builds their own final project to present to the group and publishes it on MIT’s website for the community to view, comment and download! Multiple layers of challenging material are available allowing students to repeat this class until proficiency is achieved and they are ready for the next challenge (see Advanced Coding With Scratch, Coding with Python and/or Coding Phone Apps). No previous coding experience is required.

Advanced Coding With Scratch

Grades 4th to 8th - Not Offered Fall 2017

For experienced coders only, our advanced Scratch class is an environment created to push young coders to the upper limits of logic and creativity. Students will partake in an independent study style course while being monitored, guided, and challenged by an advanced Scratch instructor. Building upon their projects throughout the semester, the end product will be published on MIT’s website for the community to view, comment and download! Please note, extensive knowledge of Scratch is necessary for this course. Prerequisite: Coding With Scratch or proof of proficiency.
